Ellen Goodman, a professor at Teachers College, Columbia University and co-chair of this Committee on Academic Competitiveness, told the magazine that”many schools and universities give little if any academic support for teaching college essays,” that is something she has observed through the years.”Even high-performing pupils from a number of our nation’s most elite business schools rarely have required writing skills” She points to several problems with writing essays, including their ineffectiveness for a way to prepare students for college and also the fact that lots of pupils do not even have the writing skills needed to prepare for school essays.
Goodman’s research demonstrates that while students don’t appear to enjoy writing essays, they are often conscious of just how much more music for writing a paper they need to understand in order to do well in college. She recommends that colleges and universities develop writing requirements and teach students how to compose essays effectively but that writing skills are not developed through formal education.
